Schaller slotted head tuners
« on: January 10, 2022, 08:43:54 AM »
I’ve a new 712 slotted head stock on its way, I’d like to swap the original tuners to Schaller’s Waverly Style Tuners, if you’ve had success with this can you tell me please the “ suitable post for my machinehead”.

I swapped out the tuners on my 322ce when two of the tuners started slipping. Tsk, tsk, Taylor. This is a 2016 model and I hope Taylor has found a different supplier.

Installation was literally drop-in and I've been very happy with them. They creak very occasionally when tuning as the post is metal on wood, but apart from that they stay in tune, don't slip and the 18:1 ratio is perfect for me.

You can buy them off Schaller's web-site to get exactly the finish and tuner button you want. The model name is GrandTune, but you have to be careful not to get the paddlehead version as they have the same name. I got mine off eBay from a French vendor "Fretdreamer" and was very happy with the transaction. Their inventory varies, but at the moment they have a nice black finished one with ivoriod buttons - https://www.ebay.com/itm/125091989642?hash=item1d2010488a:g:MlUAAOSwsk9hgPTf

I lucked into one that had a similar antiqued finish, before-after

Very nice ...love the look of those!  So much more elegant than white plastic buttons!  :D

jpmist, do you know the size of your posts, the way I’m reading it, there’s a few options. I’m guessing if they were a drop in on your guitar the same would be true for mine.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that Taylor would standardize all their slotheads with the exact same dimensions, so your's should be the same.

I measured and got 6.5mm?  But that's not what Schaller's own web-site says so I dunno what to say there, I used calipers, but it's hard measuring something round. You might measure yours and check before you order.

EDIT: Oops I read mine wrong, it's definitely 6mm, not 6.5 - sorry for the confusion

It's been a while but I know I didn't have to drill any new holes for the mounting screws so it really was an easy drop-in. When you install, you might consider some kind of lube for the headstock tuner hole, maybe paste wax or the like to reduce the creaking.

Good luck with it!

Thanks Jpmist!

Glad to help, good luck with it! It's kinda pricey but what's money compared to making tuning up the smallest of chores and helping a really nice guitar always sound it's best.

Since you're spending the big bucks, I'll also throw in the recommendation of Airyware Tuner (if you're an iPhone user). It goes really well with the 18:1 tuners as it has a nicely done graphic superimposed over a strobe that makes it really clear and simple which way to turn your tuners and how far you are from dead on.
