LKSM
« on: June 02, 2012, 04:42:45 PM »
Does the LKSM come with light strings or medium strings?
If i choose to use light gauge strings will i need to change the nut?(i assume it is cut for the stock medium strings)

the LKSM is designed to be tuned down to C# & it uses a 'custom gauge' set

LKSM                 .013        .017         .030         .038       .047        .056
                         .013        .017        .014        .018      .026        .035

one way of getting the strings needed (having to buy 2 more & having * 8 left over)
11152      12 Light      * .010      * .014      * .023        .030      .039 (.001 off)     .047
                                  * .010        .014      * .009          * .012      .018             * .027
11102      Medium           .013        .017        .026        .035         * .045        .056
plus                                 ,013        .017

another way (buying 3 more plain strings & having * 3 strings left)
11102      Medium                .013        .017        .026        .035         * .045        .056
11002      Extra Light      * .010        .014      * .023        .030      .039 (.001 off)     .047
plus                                  .013        .017        .018

comparing the custom set to conventional 12
LKSM                 .013        .017         .030         .038       .047        .056
                         .013        .017        .014        .018      .026        .035

11152                      .010        .014        .023        .030      .039        .047
                           .010        .014        .009        .012      .018        .027

you should  probably be ok for the most part -
the .003 - .009 differences shouldn't  necessitate the expense of having the nut replaced

Leo Kottke Signature Model 12-string guitar made with mahogany / sitka and no fretboard inlays

Here is a picture of the  6-string version which is looks exactly the same except for the number of strings:

What I meant to ask is if I can use lights on it wout damaging the nut/wearing it out in the wrong way

the nut slots have already been cut for the heavier gauge strings, but a light gauge set
(.010 -.047s) tuned to concert pitch  should  not 'damage' anything or require having the
nut replaced, unless there is a buzz, due to one (or more) of the nut slots being a bit too low

the only way to find out is to try it - you won't hurt anything by merely changing strings

Thanks Michael.
That's my concern, the buzzing or uneven wearing of the nut due to use of light strings; I won't be using the stock strings since elixir don't sell a set.
I have no experience w this sort of thing and hence my question; will there be uneven wearing or buzz from the use of lights

if the nut is in good condition (with the nut slots cut to the correct depth & not excessively worn), using a .010 - .047 set
tuned to concert pitch (A 440Hz) should  be fine, as the overall tension for both sets is nearly the same (256 C# vs 249)

Cool, you'll enjoy it!  My wife and I went to see LK last fall in Red Wing, MN.  Was a great show, I really enjoyed the storytelling he did between songs.  A very very fast fingerpicker, wish I could play a tenth as good.

Leo is one player I have been able to go see yet.  I sure would like to.  I wonder what the story is with him and Taylor, how did he come to play Taylor?
He who loses money, loses much; he who loses a friend, loses more; he who loses faith, loses all.
