NGD - Bought my first Taylor, a new 414ce
« on: August 24, 2016, 02:20:20 PM »
I was in the market for a 3rd acoustic guitar (not a Martin or Yamaha which I already have) and after playing many new guitars, I bought a new 414ce. The moment I picked it up and played it, I knew it could be the one. It has such an "alive" tone and plays effortlessly, I love the neck on it; very smooth and easy to handle.
Some of the other makes I looked at were Breedlove, Takamine, Blueridige and Lowde.

I'll repost pics when I figure out why they got turned sideways when I posted them here  8)

Congratulations Matt23 .  The 414e is such a great guitar.  May you play it for many years to come.

First, welcome to the UTGF.
Second, welcome to the Taylor family.
Third, congrats on a beautiful 414ce. The woods on that guitar are gorgeous.
Fourth, enjoy!!!

That's ok--I'll just turn my computer monitor sideways. ;)

I've told this story before, but I can't help but tell it again--a friend of mine bought a brand-new 414ce and immediately took it to "a guy" to have some modifications done. When he got it back it was nearly unplayable because every string buzzed under even the lightest strumming. Not only that, he had him drill another hole in it for another endpin jack because he didn't like where the other one was. Now not only does he have an unplayable guitar, but it also has an extra hole in it and also now the electronics cut in and out whenever he plugs in.

It upsets me knowing what a great guitar that is and how he messed it up. It also makes me laugh just a little because my friend can be kind of an a-hole sometimes.

Congrats. Welcome to the Taylor family, and the 414 club. What a great guitar. Is it Ovangkol or Rosewood? They just switched to doing Rosewood but I think it would have an R designation? Anyway, looks great and I hope it sounds even better.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies!

It's an Ovangkol model. At frist, I was leaning towards getting the Rosewood version since I'm more familiair with Rosewood, but when I saw and heard the Ovangkol model in the store, it was a done deal. The Ovangkol 414ce sounds great and the Ovangkol grain looks kewl! My guitar is a 2 piece bookmatched back, it looks nice. imo

Hey Matt-

That is one beautiful ovangkol back - love the color variation - so much more interesting than most  Indian rosewood backs out there. I agree that the ovangkol sound is something special. I will miss it when Taylor stops using it. Glad you were able to get one of the last ones - a hearty congratulations to you!

Hi Matt,
If I had seen that back I would have known it was Ovangkol. Enjoy.

Thanks Guys.
I'm especially enjoying the neck profile and it's finish. It's a bit beefier than my Martin, which I like; it's fast and the satin finish is smooth as silk.

Congratulations! I recently picked up one of these myself in ovangkol.  They are great guitars. Nice grain on the back of yours.
When you're happy you enjoy the music. But, when you're sad you understand the lyrics.
