Hello, From Plano, TX!
« on: November 02, 2017, 09:54:01 PM »
Hi Everybody, my name is James. I have lived in Plano my whole life. I started playing guitar around 4 years ago, during my freshman year of college.  I have always been in love with Taylor’s and alothojgh I have jumped around between Martin and Gibson, I just found the greatest guitar.   I bought a 1996 Taylor 710, with a fishman pickup installed.  It is a really beauty and plays like an absolute dream. I’ve been searching for the right sound for two years now and finally found it in this 710! I’m wondering, does anybody else have a 710 or something similar to this era? I’ve been trying to find some info on this guitar but there isn’t a lot. I’m hoping someone else loves this model as much as I do!

Glad to be here
James

Welcome to you James.

Although  I  don't own a 710, I have played many and currently own 2 90s Taylor's.  I can attest that they are special guitars made when Taylor really came into its own as a force to be reckoned with in the acoustic guitar industry.

Great find!
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Welcome James...congrats on your 710. It sounds like quite a special Taylor. I think you're gonna find that Taylor makes great guitars and you'll continue to find additional Taylor's that stun you, both new and used. Many of us have been on that journey for quite a few years. Its great fun!

Hi James,

What style of music are you into playing? Took a train to Dallas once and I am anxiously looking forward some day to get to Austin (Franklin BBQ).  We are decades apart in age but the common ground is still the guitar, and a Taylor too.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Taylor, James, and to the UTGF! Your 710's Fishman Prefix Blender pickup is not the latest greatest, but will do the job quite nicely. Here's it's User Guide in PDF, if that helps. https://www.martinguitar.com/media/4738/prefix_stereo.pdf

Were there specific questions you had about your guitar? These folks know everything, and what we don't know, we'll freely make up!   ;D

Welcome James ...good to have you here, man!

Great guitars, these 90s Taylors!  Their dreds don't get a lot of props from many folks, particularly the non-Taylor crowd.  But I personally think that's due more to "tradition" and biases that folks have for what makes a "proper" dred.  IMHO, Taylor makes a dred for people that don't like the "typical" --ubiquitous for eons-- boomy voice of a dred body.  You've "found" your sound ...that's the ticket right there!  And FWIW, I was that guy who never liked dreds, until I stumbled across a certain Taylor DN ...which has long since become my #1 go-to live-use guitar.  Glad you found your voice ...enjoy it!
