Tom Rush live version of 'Urge for Going'
« on: March 11, 2017, 12:24:28 AM »
Happened to be on youtube recently when I ran across one of my favourite songs done by one of my favourite artists. Tom Rush performing Joni Mitchell's 'Urge for Going' :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKfYw2JIvgE

Just a man and his guitar. In my book, this beats the version on Rush's 'Circle Game' album hands down. Very similar to his original demo tape that a major Boston radio station used to play on their Sunday night folk show. Believe the demo tape was out about the time of his 'Take a Little Walk with Me' album. 'Urge for Going' really put him to the front of the Boston folk scene. Or maybe more correctly pushed him way out in front, since he was about the most popular local folk artist at the time.

Great song!

His guitar has a good start to becoming a "Trigger".  Think what it would look like if it didn't have a pick guard.

"Urge For Going" is one of my go-to performance tunes.  Kind of do the Joni version, but I've incorporated a few of the things Tom does.  Both play in A major form capoed up, as do I (thanks to them).  Love seeing Tom in concert; he's funny , engaging, and just a treat to see.  I've learned 90% of what I know about open G tuning watching him , especially on Circle Game (with that business of doing B minor from the bottom string up with a partial (4 string) upside down barre on the 4th fret).
CURRENTLY PLAYING

'30 Martin 2-17 solid Mahogany
'97 Tacoma PK-30 Sitka/koa
'99 Alhambra 11C classical cedar/EIR
'05 TAYLOR 614ce
'07 Breedlove Atlas 12-string Sitka/Mahogany
'10 Froggy Bottom "C" Adi/Brazilian
'11 TAYLOR BTO GC 12-fret sinker/EIR.
'14 Alvarez Baritone Sitka/Mahogany
'18 Cordoba hybrid Flamenco Euro Spruce/Ziricote
'23 M. Colbert Baritone Alaskan Sitka/Black Limba multiscale with Manzer wedge

My walnut jumbo doesn't have a pick guard either. But since I don't use a pick, there are no spurious air vents. So I doubt I'd be traveling On that Road Again.

I am much closer to the west coast than the east coast, so no I will not be going to Rockport.  I would like to see him though.

Sorry, that was a reference to your reply which included the song title 'No Regrets', originally written and recorded by Rush, and paired with his instrumental piece titled 'Rockport Sunday'. Rockport today is mighty cold, with sub-zero wind chills to start the day. Not a healthy day to visit. With a New England Nor'easter, a true seawall-threatening 'Mighty Storm' on the way. As far as I know, Tom Rush won't be there today, at least not performing. See www.tomrush.com for upcoming schedule.

On the other hand, if you ever get an opportunity to see Tom Rush, I would advise taking it. You won't be disappointed.
